Iconic Canadian Designs
Toonie: The coin’s obverse features Raphael Maklouf’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The monarch, whose image is plated in gold, like the rim, is encircled by a rim frame. The frame has a maple leaf at the top as well as inscriptions of the monarch’s name and abbreviated title, “ELIZABETH II D G REGINA,” and the anniversary dates, “1996-2021.” The reverse features a polar bear design by Brent Townsend. Rim inscriptions on this face read, “CANADA” and “2 DOLLARS.”
Note: The note’s obverse bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II that was engraved by Henry S. Doubtfire. Next to her is a vignette of the Canadian Parliament, and the Canadian coat of arms is at the center. Two robins are depicted on the reverse. The letters “BRX” before the serial number identify this as a replacement note.
