The Iconic Canadian Maple Leaf Design
Obverse: The obverse features the right facing effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II created by Canadian portrait artist Susanna Blunt in 2003. The lifelike portrait is surrounded by a finely rendered radial lined field containing the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II" and "50 DOLLARS 2021."
Reverse: A single, meticulously detailed sugar maple leaf is centered on the reverse, contrasted against a delicate field pattern of radial lines. Inscriptions include "CANADA," "FINE GOLD 1 OZ OR PUR" and "9999." The classic maple leaf design was created by Walter Ott, the RCM's Master Engraver and Director of Art at the time of the series' inception.
