Featuring the Patriotic Heraldic Eagle Design of John Mercanti
Obverse: The obverse design was taken from Adolph Weinman's Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Bearing laurel and oak branches, an American flag draped Liberty strides confidently as the morning sun emerges from beyond the horizon. This image is joined by inscriptions of the central figure's name, "LIBERTY," the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2021." Among other important numismatic contributions, Adolph Weinman designed two of the best known coins in American history, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and the Mercury Dime. His artistic talent was not limited to numismatics, though, and his sculptures remain on display in various American cities.
Reverse: John Mercanti's heraldic eagle design appears on the Silver Eagle for the final time. The bird guards a union shield under thirteen stars, which symbolize the original states. Encircling the image are inscriptions of the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the coin's weight, "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and its face value, "ONE DOLLAR." John Mercanti is the most prolific coin and medal designer in the history of the U.S. Mint. He spent nearly four decades with the institution, including time as its Chief Engraver.
