The American Gold Eagle series has a long and illustrious history. First introduced in 1986, the American Gold Eagle is the official gold bullion coin series of the United States. They are issued in four sizes, which include the 1 oz., ½ oz., ¼ oz., and 1/10 oz., versions. Each coin contains the stated amount of gold bullion in a 91.67% pure gold planchet and features a Brilliant Uncirculated finish.
In mid-2021, the Family of Eagles reverse design created by Miley Busiek that has appeared on the series since its debut, will transition to a new reverse design for the first time in the series' history. While early 2021 bullion Gold Eagle will feature the original reverse, later in the year, the reverse will transition to the new design.
2021 will see the first major revision of the series since 1986. The reverse design will change to feature the portrait of the American Bald Eagle in profile. This dramatic image was designed by Jennie Norris of the Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program (AIP). The design was engraved by U.S. Mint Sculptor Renata Gordon.
Reverse: The reverse will portray a portrait of an eagle’s head viewed from the side with an incredible amount of detail. Inscriptions on this face will include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “50 DOLLARS,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The denomination, "50 DOLLARS," and gold content, "1 OZ. FINE GOLD."
Obverse: The obverse of the series depicts Liberty as she strides forward with confidence. Overhead she holds the Torch of Enlightenment while she firmly grasps the olive branch of peace at her side. The design was taken from the circulating 1907-1933 U.S. $20 “Double Eagle” gold coin, designed by numismatic legend Augustus St. Gaudens. This beloved design is widely regarded as the most beautiful one ever struck by the U.S. Mint. The 2021 Type-2 version features slight modifications to this design as the Mint returned to their historical assets resulting in a design that is a closer rendition to Saint-Gauden's original vision and detail.
