Why buy this 2021 Type 2 1/10 oz Gold American Eagle?
The United States Mint marks the 35th anniversary edition of the Gold Eagle Series with a new type. This Type 2 version of the coin was not introduced until mid-2021, and early 2021 issues featured the original Family of Eagles design that has been used on the series since 1986. This Type 2 piece features a new reverse design for the first time in the series, and collectors now have the unique opportunity to own two type coins from the same year.
Patriotic Eagle Design by Jennie Norris
Obverse: Most experts consider the obverse design to be the most beautiful ever to appear on an American coin. Known as the Saint Gaudens in honor of its designer, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, it features Liberty standing at the center facing the holder with an olive branch in one hand and a torch in the other. Her name, "LIBERTY," arches over the image, and the date, "2021," is included in the lower right. The 2021 type-2 version of this coin notably includes legacy details for a closer rendition to Saint Gaudens' original vision and details including modifications to design elements like the Capitol building, the sun's rays, and Liberty's torch.
Reverse: Jennie Norris's new reverse design offers a closeup look at America's national symbol, the bald eagle. Above the bird's head are the two statutory mottoes, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." Inscriptions along the rim note the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the coin's face value, "5 DOLLARS," and its metal content, "1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD."
