Why make this flawless First Day of Issue 2021 Type-2 American Gold Eagle bullion coin a part of your collection?
2021 is a historic year for the U.S. Mint's American Gold Eagle series. For the first time ever, two different designs have been released with the same date. The early year releases showcase the original 1986 design of the coin, featuring Lady Liberty on the obverse with the eagle family (Type-1) graphic on the reverse. Mid-year releases, dubbed the Type-2, represent the retirement of the eagle family reverse and the introduction of the newly designed portrait a single adult eagle.
Remarkably Detailed Gold Eagle Type-2 Imagery
Obverse: The obverse design is unchanged, depicting Lady Liberty surrounded by fifty stars, stepping onto a rock ledge near a cluster of oak foliage, which is symbolic of strength, honor and longevity. She holds aloft an olive branch and torch aflame, while stylized rays of sun appear in the background above the U.S. Capitol Building. Inscriptions include "LIBERTY," "2021" and the artist's overlapping initials "ASG." The image is borrowed from the 1907 $20 Gold Double Eagle coin designed by accomplished late 19th and early 20th century sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Restored legacy details to the Capitol Building, stars, torch and sun rays appear on the Type-2 design, based upon the original bronze cast.
Reverse: A profile view of an eagle, in an alert, left facing pose, is centered on the reverse. Accompanying inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "5 DOLLARS" and "1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD." The eagle portrait is an example of the artistry of acclaimed professional graphic designer Jennie Norris. After recently joining the U.S. Mint Artistic Infusion Program, the Type-2 Gold Eagle reverse is Ms. Norris' first coin design.
