Why does this perfectly graded First Day of Issue release of the 2021 American Gold Eagle Type-2 bullion $5 coin belong in your collection?
The U.S. Mint has introduced new imagery for its American Gold Eagle series in 2021! After thirty-five years of issue, this first ever design change to the series is focused mainly on the reverse, as the iconic family of eagles scene (Type-1) has been completely replaced with a portrait of a lone eagle (Type-2).
Gorgeous Type-2 Imagery
Obverse: Lady Liberty is portrayed as a young woman surrounded by fifty stars on the obverse, walking forward while carrying a flaming torch and olive branch, as the sun's rays emanate around the dome of the U.S. Capitol Building in the background. Inscriptions include "LIBERTY" and "2021." This personification of Liberty is borrowed from the 1907 Gold Double Eagle coin, the design of which was a collaboration between President Theodore Roosevelt and Augustus Saint-Gaudens, one of the most prolific sculptors of the late 19th and early 20th century. Although the overall obverse image remains unchanged, design enhancements for the Type-2 Gold Eagle include the restoration of legacy details to the Capitol Building, stars, torch and sun rays, which are derived from the original bronze cast.
Reverse: The Type-2 reverse features a close-up view of an eagle facing left. The stunningly detailed rendition is surrounded by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "5 DOLLARS" and "1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD." The distinctive eagle portrait is the work of acclaimed Arizona based professional graphic designer Jennie Norris. This is Ms. Norris' first design for the U.S. Mint since becoming a member of the Mint's Artistic Infusion Program.
