A Collaboration Unlike Any in Numismatic History
On a chilly November morning in 1620, a ship weighed anchor off the coast of Cape Cod. Its 102 passengers, exhausted from a months-long journey at sea, were nevertheless brimming with excitement. They had finally reached the New World, and the future held promises of happiness, prosperity, and most importantly freedom.
That ship was the Mayflower, and those passengers were the first Pilgrims to arrive from Plymouth, England.
2020 marks the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s arrival in the New World, and its being celebrated with the first-ever collaboration between the U.S. Mint and Great Britain’s Royal Mint celebrating a singular historic event with all-new designs!
Two World-Class Mints, Two Incredible Sets
In 2019, numismatic history was made when the U.S. Mint and Royal Canadian Mint joined forces to create the Pride of Two Nations Set. Incredibly popular with collectors, that release set the stage for an even bigger one-year-only issue: the Mayflower 400th Anniversary Set, released jointly by the U.S. Mint and The Royal Mint!
Unlike the Pride of Two Nations Set, which included one bullion coin from each mint with new finishes, or even the 2004 “Legacies of Freedom” set, which similarly included a standard bullion coin from the U.S. and Royal Mints, the Mayflower 400th Anniversary Sets feature all-new designs struck just for this historic release. Those designs come courtesy of U.S. Mint designer Chris Costello, making this not just the first-ever collaboration of its kind between these two world-class mints, but also the first time in history that The Royal Mint has released a legal-tender coin crafted by a U.S. Mint designer. What’s more, these sets are available in either gold or silver, with each version featuring different designs from the U.S. Mint!
Historic Chris Costello Designs Struck in Gold and Silver
The shared reverse for both the gold and silver coins from The Royal Mint features the Mayflower at full sail as it soars across the waves towards the New World. To both the left and right of the ship is a single mayflower, while the North Star shines above. Along the top are dual dates of 1620 and 2020. The obverse of both Royal Mint coins features the traditional effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
The silver coin is £2 U.K. legal tender and contains one ounce of 99.9% fine silver. The gold coin is £25 U.K. legal tender and contains a quarter-ounce of 99.99% pure gold.
Each of the U.S. Mint pieces features different, all-new designs. The one-ounce, 99.99% fine silver Proof medal displays a native Wampanoag couple as they work to plant and tend to their crops beneath the words “Sustainers of Life.” Below are the words “People of the Dawn,” a translation of the name Wampanoag. On the reverse of the silver Proof medal is a Pilgrim couple with their child, standing on the wind-swept shore of Cape Cod with the Mayflower anchored in the bay. Dual dates of 1620 and 2020 are displayed, as is the same pair of mayflowers to the left and right of the design. Above are the words “A Civil Body Politick,” famous words from the document named below the design—the Mayflower Compact. The Compact was a set of rules set by the Pilgrims for self-governance in the New World (while still claiming fealty to King James).
The quarter-ounce, 99.99% pure gold U.S. coin is $10 official legal tender and displays the same Wampanoag and Pilgrim couples. In these designs, the native couple are shown with their child looking out over Cape Cod at the anchored Mayflower beneath the word “Patuxet,” the name of a band of Wampanoag that lived in and around modern-day Plymouth, Massachusetts. The obverse displays a dual portrait of the Pilgrim couple beneath the words “In God We Trust,” the word “Plymouth” between dual dates of 1620 and 2020, and the weight, fineness and issuing nation below.
All four pieces come struck in Proof condition, with frosty devices and mirrored fields.
Available as Flawless First Releases
Proof coins and medals are struck just for collectors—and collectors want the best of the best. That means coins and medals certified as flawless Proof-70 Ultra Cameo (PF70 UC) by a respected third-party grading service like Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC).
Not only are the sets available here certified perfect PF70 UC by NGC, but they also come certified with the special First Releases designation, meaning they were received by NGC for grading within 30 days of the mintage’s release.
Exclusive Labels Hand-Signed by Designer Chris Costello
Once each coin has been graded and certified, NGC seals it within a protective display holder to preserve its flawless condition. Those holders bear exclusive NGC labels featuring the hand-written signature of Chris Costello, designer of the series and the first-ever U.S. Mint designer to have their work struck by The Royal Mint!
Each set you secure will arrive in a deluxe presentation box featuring the flags of both the United States and Great Britain, along with a mint-issued certificate of authenticity. And speaking of those mints…
Extremely Limited Availability
This sort of dual-mint collaboration involves splitting up the mintages for sale. For the one-ounce silver sets, no more than 14,200 sets will be struck. Of that limited mintage, 9,200 sets went to the U.S. Mint, while just 5,000 sets were issued by The Royal Mint.
For the quarter-ounce gold set, the total mintage is just 5,350 sets—4,850 issued by the U.S. Mint, and just 500 sets issued by The Royal Mint!
While collectors are always looking for the best of the best, scarcity is also incredibly important. The sets we’re offering here aren’t just Proof-70 Ultra Cameo, certified as First Releases and sealed with exclusive hand-signed labels. They’re also exclusively from the far smaller Royal Mint releases!
But not every set of those releases has been certified flawless PF70 UC or First Releases. That availability is even more limited, and if the Pride of Two Nations Set is anything to go by, our limited supply won’t last long. Hurry and secure your first-ever U.S. Mint/Royal Mint sets NOW!
