Since the Han Dynasty (which began in 206, B.C.), the Imperial Lion (also known as the Pixiu) has been presented in Chinese art and architecture as a defender and bringer of good fortune. A pair of stone Imperial Lions sit at the entrance to the Hall of Supreme Harmony in the Forbidden City, China’s former imperial palace in Beijing.
Now, for the first time ever, Australia’s world-famous Perth Mint is releasing a set of legal-tender Gold and Silver Proofs displaying a traditional pair of Imperial Lions!
The Imperial Lion is a mighty beast with the body of a lion and the head of a dragon. A symbol of good fortune, happiness and wealth, the lions are said to have a constant desire for silver and jewels, as well as a fierce loyalty to their owners—thus possessing the ability to bring wealth and prosperity to those that own or display them. Not a bad idea for your collection, right?
Typically, the Imperial Lion is displayed in pairs—one male and one female. This presents a balance of strength and wisdom. So it is with this attractive design of a pair of Imperial Lions sitting on a mound of ancient Chinese coins. The male guards a ball, representing supremacy over the world, while the female protects a lion cub, representing gentle guidance and protection from evil spirits. Powerful strength and gentle wisdom—yin and yang.
Collectors around the world know that the “P” mintmark of Perth Mint is a sign of utmost quality. In the case of these beautiful Proof coins, that goes for purity as well! You can secure this coin struck in two full ounces of 99.99% pure gold or 99.99% fine silver. Each coin is official Australia legal tender, bearing values of $200 and $2, respectively. Collectors often seek out legal-tender coinage, as they come backed by their issuing government for weight and purity.
High Relief Proofs
Not only are these coins minted in high-purity gold and silver, but they also come minted as High Relief Proofs. High Relief coins display their designs high off the surface of the coin, allowing their fascinating details to present themselves even more dramatically. Enhancing this contrast is the Proof condition, which gives the designs a frosty finish while the fields shine with mirrored brilliance.
Not only are these high-purity silver and gold coins struck in High Relief Proof condition, but they also come certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as flawless Proof-70 Ultra Cameo (PF70 UC) condition. NGC is one of the world’s top third-party grading services, and coins are graded on a scale of 1-70, with 70 representing absolute perfection even under magnification. So when NGC says a coin is in flawless condition, they mean it!
In addition to a flawless grade, NGC has presented these coins with a special pedigree: that of First Day of Issue (FDI). To receive this pedigree, coins must be purchased on the very first day of the mintage’s release and then submitted for grading and certification within 24 hours. In other words, these coins were graded and sealed in protective holders as quickly as possible after they were released to the public. They don’t come much fresher than that!
Mintages are incredibly limited, with just 1,000 Two-Ounce Silver and only 250 Two-Ounce Gold Forbidden City Imperial Lion High Relief Proofs struck. Even fewer were submitted to NGC for grading within the first 24 hours and returned certified as flawless PF70 UC as well as FDI. They won’t last long in our vaults!
