Last year, 2019 marked the first year that any circulating quarters bore the West Point Mint's "W" mint mark. In 2020, the United States Mint is continuing this tradition, and this example is one of just two million pieces of its kind that were released into circulation and bear the "W" mint mark. The coin also marks the 75th anniversary of the Allied victory in World War II with a V75 privy mark.
Breathtaking Red Mangrove Design by Richard Masters
Obverse: Like all other American quarters since 1932, this piece bears a left-side portrait of President George Washington that was designed by John Flanagan. The name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "QUARTER DOLLAR," are inscribed along the rim above and below the portrait, respectively, while "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" are set to the left and right of it. The special "V75" privy mark is on the left.
Reverse: Richard Masters created a young red mangrove design that was sculpted by Joseph Menna for the reverse. The young tree grows in the middle of a body of salt water. A rim frame encircling the image features four inscriptions, including "SALT RIVER BAY" and "U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS."
Beautifully Preserved MS64 V-Day Label
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded this coin Mint State 64, which is high for a coin that was released into circulation. That grade means that the coin has an average or better strike and lacks any traces of wear. This information comes on a label that features a silhouette of solders advancing next to the inscription "V DAY."
