Why order this 2020-(W) Gold First Spouse Barbara Bush?
In 2007, the US Mint introduced the First Spouses collection to celebrate America's First Ladies. First Ladies have historically been extremely popular, more so than their husbands. According to tradition, though, the US does not strike coins with images of living people, as this is associated with monarchies. As such, this 2020 Barbara Bush is the first issue in the series since the 2016 Nancy Reagan. Part of a mintage of just 2,000 pieces, this coin was struck from 1/2 oz of .999 fine gold. It bears the "W" mint mark of the West Point Mint.
Heartwarming Barbara Bush Design
Designed by Benjamin Sowards and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, the obverse features a portrait of Barbara Bush. The beloved First Lady looks directly into the eyes of the holder. Her name, "BARBARA BUSH," arches over her effigy, while her ordinal place in the line of First Spouses, "41ST," and the years that she held the post, "1989-1883," are inscribed below. Inscriptions to the left and right read, "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "LIBERTY 2020," respectively.
The reverse image celebrates Barbara Bush's role in her most important cause, literacy. John McGraw sculpted Barbara Fox's design for this face. Rich in symbolism, it consists of a person reading against a backdrop of a road, which leads to the horizon, where the sun is just beginning to emerge. The book represents literacy, education, and knowledge, while the road symbolizes the future. The sun expresses the promise of a brighter future. All of this is encircled by a rim frame in which there are several inscriptions. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" spreads throughout the top half of the rim. From left to right, the inscriptions on the bottom half of the rim read, "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "$10," "1/2 OZ." and ".9999 FINE GOLD."
