Why buy this West Point 2020-W $1 American 1 oz Silver Proof Eagle?
Since 1986, the Proof Silver Eagle has offered collectors the opportunity to own coins with one of the most iconic designs in American numismatic history. That is complimented by the work of a living legend, John Mercanti. Now in its 35th year, the series continues to attract collectors new and old who love this American tradition. This piece bears the "W" mint mark of the West Point Mint, where it was struck from 1 oz of .999 fine silver.
Featuring the Classic American Walking Liberty Design of Adolph Weinman
Liberty strides confidently to the left side of this face in Adolph Weinman's obverse design. The design comes from his famous Walking Liberty half dollar. Liberty appears patriotic with an American flag draped over her. She also dons a Phrygian cap, which traditionally is worn by freed slaves. In her left hand she carries branches, laurel for civilian honors and oak for military ones. Her right hand she extends in front of her as the morning sun emerges from beyond the horizon below. Her name, "LIBERTY," is inscribed on this face. It is joined by "2020" and "IN GOD WE TRUST."
The reverse was designed by John Mercanti, who continues to produce stunning numismatic designs three and a half decades after he created this one. Inspired by the Great Seal of the United States, Mercanti shows an eagle guarding a shield under thirteen five-pointed stars, which symbolize the country's first states. The bird holds a ribbon with the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its beak and arrows and an olive branch in its claws. The arrows remind all that the nation will fight for her values when necessary, while the olive branch expresses a desire for peace. This design is encircled by inscriptions that offer the coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," weight, "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and face value, "ONE DOLLAR."
