Why buy this West Point: 2020-W 1 oz Proof $1 American Silver Eagle?

The Silver Eagle Series, both proof and bullion, enters its 35th year with this 2020 edition. The series is an annual favorite among countless collectors thanks not only to its US government backing for weight and purity but also its stunning beauty and classic connections. The series brings together the work of a historic giant of American numismatics and the work of one who is still with us. This proof bears the "W" mint mark of the West Point Mint, where it was struck from 1 oz of .999 fine silver. That mint mark, like its finish, distinguishes this piece from business strikes.

Featuring the Beloved Walking Liberty Design of Adolph Weinman

The coin's obverse design comes from one of the most recognizable coins in American history, the Walking Liberty half dollar. Designed by Adolph Weinman, the image depicts Liberty with a Phrygian cap on her head and an American flag draped over her as she strides to the left side of the coin. IN her left hand, she bears laurel branches, which represent honors bestowed upon civilians, and oak branches, which represent honors bestowed upon members of the military. She extends her right hand in front of her, as though presenting the sunrise, which is occurring in the background,, to the holder. Obverse inscriptions include the figure's name, "LIBERTY," the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2020."

Three inscriptions, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR," encircle the reverse design. That design, which was created by John Mercanti, was modeled off of the Great Seal of the United States. A heraldic eagle guards a union shield under thirteen five-pointed stars. The stars represent the original states. The eagle holds a ribbon in its beak and arrows and an olive branch in its talons. On the ribbon are the words "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one). The arrows symbolize America's readiness to defend her values, while the olive branch indicates a preference for peace.
