Why buy this 2020-W 1 oz Silver Proof West Point $1 American Eagle?
The American Silver Eagle Proof has enamored both new and experienced collectors since it was first issued in 1986. Now in its 35th year, the series continues to be a favorite of countless collectors around the world. One of the reasons for its popularity is the fact that it brings together the work of two numismatic legends, one from America's past, Adolph Weinman, and one who is still living, John Mercanti. This Proof version of the coin is easily distinguished from its bullion counterpart both by its finish and its mint mark, the "W" of the West Point Mint. It was struck there on a 1 oz planchet of .999 fine silver.
Featuring the Incomparable Walking Liberty Design of Adolph Weinman
Few coins from American history are as widely recognizable to non-collectors today as the Walking Liberty half dollar. It is from that coin, which was issued from 1916-1947, that this series's obverse comes. Liberty appears a patriotic figure. Draped in the American flag, she wears a Phrygian cap that identifies her as a freed slave. She carries with her branches, laurel for civilian honors and oak for military ones. Her right hand she extends in front of her above the rising sun, which is emerging from beyond the horizon. Her name, "LIBERTY," arches over the image and is joined on this face by two other inscriptions, the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2020."
The Great Seal of the United States served as the model for John Mercanti's reverse design. The top portion consists of thirteen stars, one for each of the original states, arranged in a triangular formation. Below, an eagle guards a union shield. In the bird's beak is a ribbon that bears the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one). In its talons are arrows and an olive branch, which represent America's willingness to defend her values and a desire for peace, respectively. The name of the coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," its weight, "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and its face value, "ONE DOLLAR," are all inscribed along the rim.
