Why purchase this West Point 2020-W $1 American 1 oz Silver Eagle Proof?
The Proof Silver Eagle, like its bullion counterpart, enters its 35th year with this 2020 release. The series is popular throughout the globe due in large part to its bringing together of a deceased numismatic legend, Adolph Weinman, and a living one, John Mercanti. The series enjoys the backing of the US government for both weight and purity. Unlike the bullion version, this coin has a proof finish and a mint mark, the "W" of the West Point Mint. That is where this piece was struck from 1 oz of .999 fine silver.
Featuring Adolph Weinman's Iconic Walking Liberty Design
The Walking Liberty half dollar is one of just a handful of American coins that are widely recognizable not just to collectors but to Americans writ large. It is from that coin that this series takes its obverse design. Adolph Weinman shows Liberty draped in the American flag and wearing a Phrygian cap as she strides to the left side of this face. Traditionally, a Phrygian cap indicates that the wearer is a freed slave. She carries branches in her left hand, laurel for civilian honors and oak for military ones. Her right hand she extends in front of her above the morning sun, as though presenting the holder with the new day. Her name, "LIBERTY," is inscribed along the rim, while the date, "2020," is inscribed at the bottom and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed to the right.
The reverse design was modeled off of the Great Seal of the United States by John Mercanti. The original states are represented by thirteen five-pointed stars that are arranged in a triangular shape at the top. Below is a union shield that is guarded by an eagle. In the eagle's beak is a ribbon that bears the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one). The bird also holds arrows, symbols of America's military readiness, and an olive branch, which expresses a desire for peace, in its talons. All of this is encircled by three rim inscriptions, which offer the coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," weight, "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and face value, "ONE DOLLAR."
Perfect PF70 UC FDI with Exclusive Eagle Label
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) provided the grading information for this coin on an exclusive eagle that celebrates the bird that appears on the coin itself, the bald eagle. The grading company certified that the coin is in perfect condition as seen under 5x magnification by awarding it their highest grade, Proof 70. They also certified that the coin was submitted to them through an exclusive process by certifying it First Day of Issue and that its deeply mirrored fields contrast sharply with its heavily frosted devices by labeling it Ultra Cameo.
