Featuring Adolph Weinman's Classic Walking LIberty Design
Struck from 1916-1947, Adolph Weinman's Walking Liberty half dollar is among the most recognizable and beloved coins in American numismatic history. The obverse design of the Silver Eagle Series comes from that design. Liberty wears a Phrygian cap, which indicates that she is a freed slave, and is draped in the American flag as she strides to the left side of this face. She carries with her branches that represent civilian honors, laurel, and military honors, oak. She extends one hand in front of her above the morning sun, as though welcoming the new day. Her name, "LIBERTY," arches over the image. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2020," are also inscribed on this face.
On the reverse is a design that John Mercanti modeled off of the Great Seal of the United States. It consists of a union shield that is guarded by an eagle under thirteen stars. The thirteen five-pointed stars represent the original states. In the bird's beak is a ribbon that bears the words "E PLURIBUS UNUM." The eagle also clutches arrows, which serve as reminders to all that American is willing to defend her values when necessary, and an olive branch, which indicates that the nation would prefer peace. Along the rim are three inscriptions that provide essential information about the coin. They read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR.."
