Why buy this $1 American 2020-W 1 oz Proof West Point Silver Eagle?
In 1986, the United States issued its first modern silver bullion coin, the Silver Eagle, and its counterpart, the Proof Silver Eagle. Since then, both have been annual favorites among collectors. While many 'stack' the bullion coin, countless collectors also love their proofs, which serve to bring out the beloved designs of the series. This coin was struck on a 1 oz planchet of .999 fine silver at the West Point Mint. It has a "W" mint mark that, like its finish, distinguishes it from the bullion version of the coin.
Featuring the Iconic Walking Liberty Design of Adolph Weinman
Adolph Weinman created the obverse design for the half dollar, where it appeared from 1916-1947. Liberty strides confidently to the left carrying laurel and oak branches in her left hand. The branches represent civilian and military honors, respectively. The allegorical figure is draped in the American flag and wears a Phrygian cap, which traditionally is worn by freed slaves. She extends her right hand in front of her as the sun rises below it. The figure's name, "LIBERTY," is inscribed at the top, while other obverse inscriptions include the date, "2020," and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST."
Then future US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti designed the obverse. Modeled off of the Great Seal of the United States, it consists of an eagle guarding a union shield under thirteen stars. The stars, which are arranged in a triangular formation, represent the original states. The eagle holds a ribbon that bears the inscripiton "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) in its beak. In its talons the eagle holds arrows, which represent America's willingness to defend her values, and an olive branch, which expresses a desire for peace. Rim inscriptions read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR."
Impeccable PF70 UC ER with Exclusive Eagle Label
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) certified that this proof remains in perfect condition as seen under 5x magnification by awarding it their highest grade, Proof 70. The prestigious grading company also certified that the coin's deeply mirrored fields contrast particularly sharply with its heavily frosted devices by certifying it Ultra Cameo. Finally, they indicated that it was submitted to them no more than 30 days after its initial release from the mint by labeling it Early Releases. This information comes provided on a label that features an image of the national bird, the bald eagle.
