Why purchase this $1 American 2020-W West Point 1 oz Silver Proof Eagle?
Now in its 35th year, the American Silver Eagle Proof Series continues to be an extremely popular option among collectors novice and experienced alike. It features designs from two American legends, one past and one present, which is just one of the reasons that collectors around the world continue to take to it. This piece was struck on a 1 oz planchet of .999 fine silver at the West Point Mint. It bears that mint's "W" mint mark on the reverse. That mark combines with the proof finish to distinguish this piece from the bullion version of the coin.
Featuring Adolph Weinman's Famous Walking Liberty Design
On the obverse is the iconic Walking Liberty design of Adolph Weinman. The image appeared on American half dollars from 1916-1947. It features an America flag-draped Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap as she carries laurel and oak branches. The cap traditionally designates its wearer as a freed slave. The branches are laurel, which represent civilian honors, and oak, which represent military honors. Liberty also extends one hand in front of her above the morning sun, as if greeting the new day. Obverse inscriptions include her name, "LIBERTY," the date, "2020," and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST."
On the reverse is an adaptation of the Great Seal of the United States by John Mercanti. An eagle protects a union shield under an arrangement of thirteen five-pointed stars. The stars represent the original thirteen states. The eagle holds a ribbon that bears the words "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) in its beak, as well as arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The olive branch indicates that the country would prefer peace, while the arrows are a stern warning that the country will defend her values when necessary. Inscriptions of the coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," weight, "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and face value, "ONE DOLLAR," spread throughout the rim.
