Why order this 2020-W $1 American Proof West Point 1 oz Silver Eagle?
Like its bullion counterpart, the Proof Silver Eagle was first issued in 1986. The series combines one of the most famous designs in the history of American numismatics with a design created by a still living legend, John Mercanti. This piece was struck on a 1 oz planchet at the West Point Mint. It has a "W" mint mark that, like its finish, make it easily distinguishable from the bullion version of the coin.
Featuring the Historic Walking Liberty Design of Adolph Weinman
The obverse design for the series comes from the iconic Walking Liberty half dollar, which was designed by Adolph Weinman. Liberty carries laurel and oak branches, symbols of civilian and military honors, respectively, in her left hand while striding to the left side of the coin. An American flag is draped over her, and she wears a Phrygian cap on her head. The cap is traditionally worn by freed slaves. She extends her right hand in front of her above the rising sun, as though she is presenting the new day to the holder. Her name, "LIBERTY," spreads throughout the top half of the rim, while "IN GOD WE TRUST," the national motto, and "2020," the date, are also included on this face.
John Mercanti, who would go on to serve as Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, designed the obverse. He used the Great Seal of the United States as his model. At the top are thirteen five-pointed stars, one for each of the original states, arranged in a triangular formation. Below, an eagle guards a union shield while clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The arrows remind all that America is willing to defend her values, while the olive branch expresses a desire for peace. The bird also holds a ribbon that bears the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) in its beak. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR" encircle the image along the rim.
Nearly Perfect PF69 UC ER with Exclusive Eagle Label
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) provided the grading information for this coin on a label that features an image of America's national bird, the bald eagle. The company certified that the coin is in Proof 69 condition, which means that it appears flawless to the unaided eye. They also certified the piece Ultra Cameo (UC) and Early Releases (ER). UC means that its deeply mirrored fields and heavily frosted devices contrast particularly sharply, while ER means that it was submitted for grading no more than 30 days after its initial release from the mint.
