Why buy this 2020-W West Point $1 American 1 oz Silver Eagle?
Own a piece of the 35th annual issue of the American Proof Silver Eagle. Starting in 1986 and continuing today, this series has offered collectors the opportunity to own a piece that brings together the work of two American numismatic legends. Unlike its bullion counterpart, this proof has a mint mark, the "W" of the West Point Mint. It was struck there from 1 oz of .999 fine silver. This coin will arrive in GEM Proof condition in its original packaging from the US Mint.
Featuring Adolph Weinman's Famous Walking Liberty Design
The coin's obverse features the Walking Liberty design that Adolph Weinman created for the half dollar. It appeared on that coin from 1916-1947. Draped in the American flag and wearing a traditional indicator of a freed slave, a Phrygian cap, Liberty strides confidently to the left side of this face. She carries with her branches, laurel to represent civilian honors and oak to represent military ones. She also extends one hand ahead of her above the morning sun, as though she is presenting the new day to the holder. Her name, "LIBERTY," spreads throughout the top half of the rim, while additional obverse inscriptions include the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2020."
John Mercanti created the reverse design using the Great Seal of the United States as his model. It is centered on a union shield that is guarded by a heraldic eagle. The bird holds a ribbon in its beak and arrows and an olive branch in its claws. "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) is inscribed on the ribbon. The arrows represent America's willingness to go to war to stand up for her values, while the arrows express a desire for peace. Above the bird's head is a triangular arrangement of thirteen five-pointed stars, symbols of the country's first states. Rim inscriptions provide essential information about the coin, including its country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," its weight, "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and its face value, "ONE DOLLAR."
