Why order this (2020) United States 100th Anniversary of Women's Suffrage Medal Silver Proof?
The United States was founded on, among other things, the Enlightenment notion that the authority of the government must come from the consent of the government. For much of American history, though, women were prohibited from giving such consent. After decades of struggle, women finally earned the right to vote in 1920 with the ratification of the 19th Amendment. This medal marks the centennial anniversary of that pivotal event in American history.
Striking Women's Suffrage Design by Beth Zaiken
Obverse: Beth Zaiken designed and Renata Gordon sculpted the obverse design. Several women's hands hold up a foundation stone as a young girl's hand reaches up toward it. This represents the decades long struggle for suffrage. "WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE CENTENNIAL" is inscribed on the stone.
Reverse: Patricia Lucas-Morris created the reverse design, which was sculpted by Renata Gordon. The text of the 19th Amendment, "THE RIGHT OF CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES TO VOTE SHALL NOT BE DENIED OR ABRIDGED BY THE UNITED STATES OR BY ANY STATE ON ACCOUNT OF SEX," is superimposed on the American flag. The year of ratification, "1920," is included at the bottom.
Flawless PF70 UC FR with Mercanti Signed Label
Former United States Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti hand signed the label on which Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) provided this medal's grading information. That information includes the company's highest grade, Proof 70, which indicates that a piece is perfect as seen under 5x magnification. This certified example also includes Ultra Cameo and First Releases certifications. The former means that a piece exhibits particularly sharp contrasts between heavily frosted devices and deeply mirrored fields, while the latter means that it was submitted for grading no more than 30 days after its initial release from the mint.
