Numismatists the world over eagerly await the release of the various U.S. Mint proof and mint sets sets that are released each year. The 2020 Silver Proof Set is highly anticipated, because not only will it contain examples of the circulating coins struck in silver, but the U.S. Mint is continuing the popular practice of including a West Point Mint marked premium coin with the purchase of the set. These Silver Proof sets are struck on 99.9% pure silver planchets for the dime, quarters and half dollar. The cent, nickel and dollar coins are struck on their respective alloy planchets.
The standard proof coins included in this set offer stunning presentation, collectible mint marks and the best finish in Numismatics. Their devices are frosty while the flat fields are mirror-like.
The standard silver proof coins included in the set include the five America the Beautiful Quarters being released in 2020: the National Park of American Samoa (AS), Weir Farm National Historic Site (CT), Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve (VI), Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park (VT) and the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve (KS).
A Native American dollar coin featuring the portrait of Alaskan Native Civil Rights activist Elizabeth Peratrovich is also included in the set, along with the standard Roosevelt Dime, Kennedy Half and Jefferson Nickel.
Traditionally, U.S. proof coins are struck at the San Francisco branch of the U.S. Mint and bear the iconic “S” mint mark.
Last year, the various collector sets included the first-ever West Point “W” mint marked cents. For more information about that exciting release, check out this Info-Vault article.
This year sets will include the first-ever West Point “W” mint marked Jefferson nickels. The “W” mint marked Jefferson Nickel will be packaged separately and will feature a stunning “reverse proof “ finish that boasts frosty fields and highly reflective devices.
Last year saw the mint issue ATB quarters into circulation that featured the “W” mint mark, in an effort to reignite the passion for coin collecting in America. To bolster this effort the various premium “W” mint marked Lincoln cents were issued with the Proof set, Silver Proof Set and the Uncirculated Set. This year the tradition continues with the nickel premiums and further West Point struck circulating quarters. Only time will tell if next year’s collector sets will include “W” mint marked dimes.
One thing is for sure though, these “W” struck premium coins have certainly resonated with collectors everywhere.
