Why purchase this R2 South Africa 2020 2 oz Silver Krugerrand Proof?
The Gold Krugerrand celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017. To mark the occasion, the South African Mint issued the first ever Silver Krugerrands, thus treating collectors to something that they had long wanted. Collectors took strongly to the new, and Silver Krugerrands are now an annual series. Part of a mintage of just 10,000 pieces, this piece was struck from 2 oz of .999 fine silver.
Classic Springbok Antelope Design by Coert Steynberg
Silver Krugerrands share the same designs as their gold counterparts. Otto Schultz's obverse design shows Paul Kruger in left-side profile. Shown with his famous long, thick beard, Kruger was the third President of the South African Republic. Though a controversial figure in South African history, his importance is beyond dispute. The effigy is joined by a pair of inscriptions that note the name of the issuing country in Afrikaans, "SUID-AFRIKA," and English, "SOUTH AFRICA."
On the reverse is a right-side view of a springbok antelope bounding across the South African plains. Coert Steynberg created the image. He shows the animal with its head slightly turned to offer the holder a better look at its horns. The springbok is so closely associated with the issuing country that its international sports teams are nicknamed "the Springboks." The date, "2020," is split to the left and right, while the name of the coin, "KRUGERRAND," is inscribed at the top of this face. The bottom half of the rim bears two inscriptions, one noting the coin's weight in English and Afrikaans, "FYNSILVER 2 OZ FINE SILVER," and the other noting its face value, "R2."
