Why buy this 1 oz Silver 2020 R1 South Africa Krugerrand?
In 1967, the South African Mint issued the first ever Gold Krugerrand. Despite a turbulant history marred by Western boycotts due to apartheid, the series grew in popularity to its current status as an icon and favorite of countless collectors. The South African Mint celebrated the 50th anniversary of the series in 2017 with the issuance of the first ever Silver Krugerrand. The new coin was premium uncirculated. The following year, bullion Silver Krugerrands were issued for the first time. Now in the third year, the new series piggybacks on the traditions of the old. This piece was struck on a 1 oz planchet of .999 fine silver.
Featuring Coert Steynberg's Classic Springbok Antelope Design
The designs on both faces of the Silver Krugerrand come from the gold version of the coin. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of one of the most important figures in South African history, Paul Kruger. Designed by Otto Schultz, the image shows the third President of the South African Republic with a long, thick beard. Kruger's place in the country's history continues to be a source of controversy, but his status as a central figure in the country's history is not. His portrait is joined on the obverse by a pair of inscriptions, which note the name of the issuing country in Afrikaans, "SUID-AFRIKA," and English, "SOUTH AFRICA."
On the reverse is Coert Steynberg's springbok antelope design. The springbok is the national animal of South Africa and lends its name to the country's national sports teams. The graceful creature is shown in its native habitat with its head turned to face the right of the holder, offering an excellent view of its face and horns. The date, "2020," is split to either side of the animal, with the first two digits to the left and the last two on the right. "KRUGERRAND" arches over the animal. On the bottom portion of the rim are inscriptions that note the weight of the coin in Afrikaans and English, "FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER," and its face value, "R1."
