Why buy this R1 South Africa 2020 1 oz Silver Krugerrand?
In 1967, South Africa presented the world with the grandfather of modern bullion coins, the Gold Krugerrand. While the coin was popular in the East and became popular in the West after the end of apartheid-era boycotts, it long went without a silver counterpart. That changed in 2017 when the South African Mint marked the 50th anniversary of the treasured gold series with the first ever Silver Krugerrands. Those first Silver Krugerrands were considered Premium Uncirclated. The following year, the mint followed up with the first ever silver bullion versions of the coin. This 2020 Silver Krugerrand continues the new and old traditions. It was struck from 1 oz of .999 fine silver.
Featuring Coert Steynberg's Iconic Springbok Design
Both faces of the Silver Krugerrand take their designs from the gold version of the coin. On the obverse is Otto Schultz's left-side profile of Paul Kruger. Although his legacy is extremely controversial, that this third President of the South African Republic is a central figure in the country's history is beyond dispute. Schultz shows him with his long, thick beard. He is joined by inscriptions of the name of the issuing country in Afrikaans, "SUID-AFRIKA," and English, "SOUTH AFRICA.
On the reverse is a springbok antelope design by Coert Steynberg. The springbok is the national animal of South Africa, and the nation's international sports teams are frequently called "the Springboks." Steynberg shows the animal bounding across the South African plains with its head turned to the right of the holder, offering him a clearer view of its face and horns. The date, "2020," is split to either side of the animal. At the top of this face is the name of the coin, "KRUGERRAND," while the weight is noted in Afrikaans and English, "FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER." They are joined by the coin's face value, "R1."
