Why buy this R1 South Africa 2020 1 oz Silver Krugerrand Proof?
The South African Gold Krugerrand is the grandfather of modern bullion coins. They were first issued in 1967, and for half a century only Gold Krugerrands were issued. That changed in 2017 when the South African Mint issued the first ever Silver Krugerrands to mark the 50th anniversary of the iconic gold coin. Now entering its fourth year, the series continues to be popular among collectors. This proof was struck from 1 oz of .999 fine silver and will arrive in GEM Proof condition.
Exquisite Antelope Design by Coert Steynberg
The obverse bears a left-side portrait of the third President of the South African Republic, Paul Kruger. Kruger was a monumental - and controversial - figure in South African history. The portrait, which was designed by Otto Schultz, shows him with the long, thick beard for which he was well known. Arching over his head is the name of the issuing country in Afrikaans, "SUID-AFRIKA," and English, "SOUTH AFRICA."
A springbok antelope design by Coert Steynberg serves as the reverse design. The graceful creature is closely associated with the issuing nation, so much so that the international sports teams of South Africa are nicknamed "the Springboks." The animal bounds to the right and has its head turned to face the holder's right, offering him a clearer look at its face and the two horns on its head. The name of the coin, "KRUGERRAND," arches over the springbok, while its date, "2020," is split to either side of it. Along the bottom half of the rim are inscriptions that offer the coin's weight in Afrikaans and English, "FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER," and its face value, "R1."
