Why purchase this San Francisco Mint 2020-S Proof American Silver Eagle?
This 2020-S Proof Silver Eagle is an essential keepsake for fans of the iconic series. The coin comes from the San Francisco Mint, the closest US Mint facility to the wildfires that devastated several Western states in 2020. Of course, the wildfires are one of several stories that make 2020 a year that changed history.
Featuring Patriotic Designs by Adolph Weinman and John Mercanti
Obverse: The coin's obverse design is Walking Liberty, which Adolph Weinman created for the half dollar. Liberty dons a Phrygian cap, which identifies her as a freed slave, as she carries laurel and oak branches against a backdrop of the rising sun. Her name, "LIBERTY," is inscribed at the top, while additional obverse inscriptions include the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2020." Adolph Weinman designed two of the most notable coins in American history, the Walking Liberty half dollar and the Mercury dime. He also sculpted several works, which are displayed in cities throughout the United States.
Reverse: The reverse design was modeled off of the Great Seal of the United States by John Mercanti. Thirteen five-pointed stars are arranged above the head of an eagle, which protects a union shield. Along the rim are inscriptions that note the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the coin's weight, "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and its face value, "ONE DOLLAR." John Mercanti spent decades working for the US Mint, including four years as the institution's Chief Engraver. During that time, he designed more coins and medals than anyone else in the history of the mint.
