Why Choose This PF70 First Day of Issue 2020-S Basketball Hall of Fame Commemorative Proof Half Dollar?
Over the years, the U.S. Mint has treated collectors to a wide range of new coins while benefiting causes and organizations through their modern commemorative program. The 60th anniversary of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame was recognized in 2020 with the release of commemorative silver dollars, half dollars, and $5 gold coins. The San Francisco Mint struck this 2020-S Basketball Hall of Fame proof half dollar. Mintage is limited and it has a clad composition.
Modern Basketball Designs with Curved Surfaces
One of the unique things about these commemoratives is that they are dome shaped. The obverse is concave and shows a basketball flying through the air as 3 players reach for it at the same time. The "S" mint mark is just above the date.
On the reverse, a basketball can be seen from a very close perspective as it goes through the hoop and drops into the net. This design looks great with the convex shape of the surface.
PF70 First Day of Issue from NGC
