This issue honors Septima Clark, an educator who was active in promoting the link between education and citizenship. Under her leadership, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference established more than 800 citizenship schools.
Striking Septima Clark and Students Design by Justin Kunz
Obverse: Justin Kunz designed and Phebe Hemphill sculpted the obverse design. It features a side view of the Statue of Liberty. The figure is flanked by inscriptions of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the coin's face value, "$1." A privy mark is below the motto.
Reverse: The coin's reverse, which was also designed by Kunz and sculpted by Hemphill, shows Septima Clark marching with three African-American students. Three of the four are carrying books, while one student carries an American flag. Inscriptions on this face include the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the name of the honored figure, "SEPTIMA CLARK," and the state represented, "SOUTH CAROLINA."
