The obverse and reverse designs of this coin were both created by Justin Kunz and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. Obverse: The obverse design is common to all coins in this series. The Statute of Liberty is shown from the side. To the left is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," while the face value of the coin, "$1," is noted on the right. The privy mark is included beneath the national motto.
Reverse: Three students march with Septima Clark on the reverse. Clark and two of the students carry books, while the remaining student carries an American flag. Inscriptions on this face include the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the name of the featured innovator, "SEPTIMA CLARK," and the name of the state represented, "SOUTH CAROLINA."
