Why order this 2020-(S) 1 oz Silver American Eagle Struck at San Francisco Mint Emergency Production?
The United States Mint, like everything else, was heavily impacted by COVID-19. Late in the year, the mint had to turn to the San Francisco Mint to strike bullion Silver Eagles to keep up with demand. This coin makes for a fantastic keepsake from a year that will never be forgotten by those who lived through it.
Featuring Classic Designs by Adolph Weinman and John Mercanti
Obverse: Draped in the American flag and wearing a Phrygian cap on her head, Liberty carries laurel and oak branches, which represent civilian and military honors, against a backdrop of the rising sun. The design comes from Adolph Weinman's Walking Liberty half dollar. Her name, "LIBERTY," joins the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2020," as the obverse inscriptions. Adolph Weinman designed the Walking Liberty half dollar and the Mercury dime, two of the most important pieces in America's early 20th century numismatic renaissance. His sculptures remain on display in several cities throughout the United States.
Reverse: The reverse features a design that John Mercanti modeled off of the Great Seal of the United States. Thirteen stars represent the original states above an eagle, which protects a union shield. Encircling the design are three rim inscriptions, which read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR." John Mercanti spent 37 years with the US Mint, including time in its Chief Engraver post. During that time, he became the most prolific coin and medal designer in the institution's history.
