Why purchase this 2020-P 100th Anniversary of Women's Suffrage Commemorative Silver Dollar BU?
Passed by Congress in 1919 and ratified by a sufficient number of states to become law in 2020, the 19th Amendment was one of the most important moments in American history. It guaranteed women the right to vote. This important change set the stage for further developments in women's rights and granted half of Americans the opportunity to choose their own government. Part of a maximum mintage of 400,000 pieces, which includes Proof strikes, this coin was struck from 26.73 g of .999 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint. It bears that mint's "P" mint mark.
Moving Suffragettes Design by Christina Hess
Christina Hess designed and Phebe Hemphill sculpted both faces of this coin. On the obverse are three women wearing hats, each of which represents different decades in the women's suffrage movement. "VOTES" is inscribed on the hat in the middle. The one on the bottom is a cloche hat with an art deco pattern. It has a button on which the year of ratification, "1920," is inscribed. Rim inscriptions on this face read, "LIBERTY" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM." The coin's face value, "$1," is also included in the upper left.
The reverse features "2020" dropping into a ballot box. The box is decorated in an art deco style and has "VOTES FOR WOMEN" inscribed on its side. Other inscriptions on the box provide the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST."
