The new issued marked the first ever collaboration between a U.S. Mint Chief Engraver, Mercanti, and a foreign mint. Now in its seventh year, the series brings a new design of this remarkable bird to collectors around the world. This piece was struck on a 1 oz planchet of .9999 fine silver. It bears the "P" mint mark of the Perth Mint in the upper left of the reverse.
Striking Wedge-Tailed Eagle Design by John Mercanti
The obverse bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. The Royal Mint designer shows the monarch wearing her Royal Diamond Diadem. She faces right and also dons a necklace and earrings as she faces right. The effigy is encircled by a rim frame in which there are three inscriptions, the monarch's name, "ELIZABETH II," the name of the issuing country, "AUSTRALIA," and the coin's face value, "1 DOLLAR."
On the reverse is a new wedge-tailed eagle design by John Mercanti. The bird extends its talons forward while spreading its wings, preparing either to land or to snatch up its next meal. Mercanti's closeup design shows the powerful bird in remarkable detail. A rim frame bears inscriptions of the name of the coin, "AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE," the date, "2020," and the weight and purity of the coin, "1 OZ 9999 SILVER."
Virtually Flawless MS69 with Mercanti Signed Flag Label
John Mercanti hand signed the label on which Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) provided its grading information. The label also bears an American flag. PCGS graded the coin Mint State 69, which means that it appears perfect to the unaided eye.
