Why purchase this First Day of Issue 2020-(P) American Silver Eagle bullion coin?
In the 35th year of issue of the American Silver Eagle, in the midst of the 2020 coronavirus crisis, the U.S. Mint was prompted to modify its production schedule to safely meet higher demand for precious metals by authorizing an Emergency Production mintage at its Philadelphia branch. Since the bullion coins traditionally do not carry a Mint mark, this 2020 Silver Eagle is certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as one of the 240,000 Philadelphia minted bullion coins on its label only.
Breathtaking Silver Eagle Design
The obverse is graced with the iconic rendition of Lady Liberty enveloped in the American flag. Initially created by Adolph A. Weinman for the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar, the image is surrounded by the inscriptions "LIBERTY," "2020" and "IN GOD WE TRUST."
The reverse features a heraldic eagle grasping a cluster of arrows and an olive branch. Inscribed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," "ONE DOLLAR" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM." This heraldic design was created by the former United States Mint Chief Engraver, John Mercanti. Not only was Mercanti the 12th U.S. Mint Chief Engraver, but he also known for designing the most coins and medals than any employee in the history of the U.S. Mint
