Why add the 2020-(P) 1 oz Silver American Eagle Struck at Philadelphia $1 Coin Mint Error Weakly Struck NGC MS69 FDI Black Core Holder Mercanti Signed Label to your collection?

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) experts graded this 2020-(P) 1 oz. Silver American Eagle $1 Coin at the solid Mint State 69 (MS69) level. That only tells part of the story. The grading company also determined that this example is a Weakly Struck Mint Error which is an error caused by a weak strike during the minting process usually caused by inadequate ram pressure of insufficient die approximation. This issue was also notably part of a production run of Silver Eagles at the Philadelphia Mint authorized by the United States Mint in 2020 to keep up with customer demands in the face of pandemic related production delays. The West Point Branch where bullion Silver Eagles are typically struck was temporarily shut down at the time. Only 240,000 of these Silver Eagles were produced during this authorized production run at the Philadelphia Mint.

  • The coin qualified for the First Day of Issue (FDI) designation.
  • This Silver Eagle was encapsulated in an attractive NGC Black Core Holder.
  • This coin features the a certification label hand signed by John Mercanti!
  • The series is struck on 1 oz. .999 fine planchets.
  • This coin was struck during an authorized production run at the Philadelphia Mint where only 240,000 coins were struck!
  • NGC awarded this coin their Emergency Production pedigree due to the circumstances surrounding its striking.
  • The coin was determined to be a Philadelphia struck coin but bears no mint mark.

Stunning Historic Designs

Obverse: The obverse was designed by artist Adolph A. Weinman from the 1916-1947 circulating "Walking Liberty" half dollar. Liberty carries oak and laurel branches, spreading Freedom throughout the land. She is shown wrapped in the U.S. flag.

Reverse: The reverse was designed by the now retired, 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, John Mercanti who signed the certification label. The eagle is depicted with his powerful wings spread while gripping arrows and an olive branch.

Mint State 69 Error Coin

Mint State 69 examples typically have well defined strikes, full mint luster and outstanding eye appeal. In an interesting twist, while NGC did determine that this coin was in Mint State 69 condition, they also determined that is qualified for the Weakly Struck Mint Error designation. This coin would be a great example of a mint error for any collection. This piece also received NGC's Emergency Production pedigree due to the circumstances of its striking.
