It bears a left-side portrait of Queen Victoria wearing a tiara along with the inscriptions "POSTAGE" and "ONE PENNY." The rim frame of the coin features the monarch's name, "QUEEN VICTORIA," the name of the stamp, "THE PENNY BLACK," and the coin's face value, "5 POUNDS."
Reverse: On the reverse is Raphael Maklouf's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which appeared on a 1990 coin celebrating the Penny Black. She dons her Royal Diamond Diadem. A rim frame encircling the effigy bears the inscriptions, "QUEEN ELIZABETH II," "ISLE OF MAN," and "2020."

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) certified that this coin appears perfect under 5x magnification by grading it Proof 70. The grading company also certified this piece Ultra Cameo (UC) and First Day of Issue (FDI). The FDI designation is reserved for coins that were submitted for grading through an exclusive process, while UC means that a coin has deeply mirrored fields and heavily frosted devices. Ralph Maklouf hand signed the label on which NGC provided this information. The label also features a custom designed label that bears an image of the Penny Black stamp.
