Why order this Cupronickel 2020 £2 Great Britain Victory in Europe Day - 75th Anniversary?
The Second World War was the deadliest conflict in human history. Fought in two theaters, it claimed the lives of an estimated 70-85 million people, it involved over 30 countries and was fought in two oceans and on four continents. One of the most devastated countries was Great Britain, which marks the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, the day Nazi Germany surrendered. This cupro-nickel piece is one of four coins, along with two silver and one gold, struck to mark the occasion. It bears the inscription "JUST TRIUMPH AND PROUD SORROW" on the edge.
Powerful Celebration Design by Dominique Evans
On the obverse is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. The monarch faces right while wearing her Royal Diamond Diadem, the crown that she traditionally wears to the State Opening of Parliament. Her name and abbreviated Latin title, "ELIZABETH II D G REG F D" (Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith) are inscribed along the rim, as is the face value of the coin, "2 POUNDS."
The reverse features a design of people celebrating Victory in Europe Day. A woman in the foreground holds high a newspaper reporting the event as a large crowd celebrates in the background. The anniversary dates, "1945-2020," are inscribed at the top, while "VICTORY IN EUROPE DAY" is inscribed along the bottom half of the rim.
