Why buy this £5 Great Britain 2020 2 oz Silver Queen's Beasts - White Lion of Mortimer?
The Queen's Beasts Series began in 2017 and has two issues every year. The series is part of a celebration of the monarchy and the current monarch, who became the longest reigning monarch in British history in 2015. Other recent celebrations have included Elizabeth II's 90th birthday, which she celebrated in 2016, the centennial anniversary of the House of Windsor in 2017, and the 65th anniversary of the coronation of the current monarch in 2018. The series celebrates the ten creatures that were present in stone form at Elizabeth II's coronation. This coin, which is part of the seventh issue in the series, was struck at the Royal Mint from 2 oz of .9999 fine silver and features the White Lion of Mortimer. It will arrive in GEM Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
Powerful White Lion of Mortimer Design by Jody Clark
Both faces of this coin bear designs of Jody Clark. On the obverse is his right-side portrait of reigning British monarch Queen Elizabeth II. Clark shows the aging sovereign wearing her Royal Diamond Diadem, which she wears to the annual State Opening of Parliament, and earrings. Her name and abbreviated Latin title, "ELIZABETH II D G REG F D" (Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith) join the coin's face value, "5 POUNDS," on the rim.
The Lion of Mortimer stands proudly on two legs on the reverse. He faces right and extends one of his front paws menacingly while swinging his long tail and balancing a shield with his other front paw. On the shield is the white rose of York with the rays of the sun. Edward IV saw the sun as a sign of luck in battle and adopted it as his own. The image is encircled by a rim frame in which there are several inscriptions, including the name of the creature depicted, "WHITE LION OF MORTIMER." Other inscriptions read, "2 OZ FINE SILVER 999.9" and "2020."
