Why order this 1 oz Silver 2020 £2 Great Britain Queen's Beasts - White Lion of Mortimer Proof?
The British Royal Mint captured the imaginations of collectors when they started the Queen's Beasts Series in 2017. The series offers collectors the chance to put together complete collections of diverse coins within a relatively short period of time. Each issue features one of the creatures that was present in stone form at Queen Elizabeth II's coronation. This piece is the seventh issue in the set and features the White Lion of Mortimer, which came to monarch through the house of York. Part of a mintage of just 4,360 pieces, this proof was struck on a 1 oz planchet of .999 fine silver.
Striking White Lion of Mortimer Design by Jody Clark
A portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in right-side profile features on the obverse. The effigy, which was designed by Jody Clark, shows the monarch wearing her Royal Diamond Diadem. That is the crown that she traditionally wears to Britain's State Opening of Parliament. The face value of the coin, "2 POUNDS," is inscribed along the rim as are the monarch's name and abbreviated Latin title, "ELIZABETH II D G REG F D" (Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith).
Clark also designed the reverse image, the White Lion of Mortimer. The animal lets out a loud roar as its stands on its hind legs with its tail waiving. With one of its front paws, it balances a shield. At the center of the shield is the House of York's white rose, which is superimposed on a shining sun. A rim frame bears a pair of inscriptions, the coin's date, "2020," and the creature's name, "WHITE LION OF MORTIMER."
