Today, Americans are familiar with the 50 states that have been on the U.S. map for more than half a century. Many may find it difficult to imagine the U.S. divided any other way. At various points in its history, though, the country's states had some different borders than they do today. Proposed states and pseudo-states have been a part of the nation's history. This series from Germany's Mayer Mint features four states that never quite joined the union including the State of Deseret in Utah, the State of Franklin in Tennessee, the State of Jacinto in Texas, and the State of McDonald in Missouri.
Stunning Designs by Joel Iskowitz
Internationally renowned artist Joel Iskowitz created the obverse and reverse designs of each coin. Joel Iskowitz was a member of the United States Mint's Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) and designed coins in both the America the Beautiful and 50 States Quarters series.
Obverse: Dominating the obverse of each coin is either a natural or historical scene from the state. That design is encircled by a rim frame that bears an inscription of the name of the series, "LOST STATES OF AMERICA." At the bottom of the obverse is a small section that looks like the traditional obverse of a coin from the Cook Islands. Ian Rank-Broadley's famous right-side effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. It is encircled by inscriptions of the monarch's name, the coin's face value, the name of the issuing country, and the date.
Reverse: On the reverse of each coin is a portrait of someone who was associated with the state and an inscription of their name. Other inscriptions include the name of the state and the year that it was proposed. The State of Deseret design features Brigham Young, the State of Franklin design features Benjamin Franklin, the State of Jacinto features Sam Houston, and the State of McDonald features Native American.
