Why order this Lost States of America 2020 $1 Cook Islands 1 oz Silver High Relief State of Franklin Proof?

The State of Franklin was a territory in western North Carolina that the state ceded to the federal government as part of an effort to pay off debts incurred in the Revolutionary War. The state petitioned Congress for admission to the union, but only seven states supported its admission. Two-thirds of the thirteen would have had to vote to admit it under the Articles of Confederation. This coin honors this unique history.

Exquisite Natural Scenery Design by Joel Iskowitz

Obverse: Both faces of this coin bear designs by the internationally renowned artist Joel Iskowitz, a member of the U.S. Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) until 2018, who is responsible for iconic designs in the America the Beautiful and State Quarters series. On the obverse, a bird soars above some of the State of Franklin’s great outdoors. The name of the series, “LOST STATES OF AMERICA,” joins stars on the rim frame. The bottom of this face has a circle that includes what would normally appear on the obverse of a coin from the Cook Islands. Queen Elizabeth II’s right-side portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley is encircled by inscriptions of her name, “ELIZABETH II,” the coin’s face value, “1 DOLLAR,” the name of the issuing country, “COOK ISLANDS,” and the date, “2020.”

Reverse: On the reverse is a left-side portrait of Ben Franklin, for whom the lost state was named. Next to his effigy is the date in which the state was formed, “1784.” Along the rim are inscriptions of the figure’s name, “BEN FRANKLIN,” and the state that was named for him, “STATE OF FRANKLIN.”
