Why buy this ¥10 China 2020 30 g Silver Panda?
The 1 oz Silver Panda was first struck as a bullion coin in 1988. For its first decade-plus, mintages stayed under a quarter of a million pieces. Demand for the coin led to a mintage increase to a half million pieces in 2001 and 1.5 million pieces in 2010. Over the past decade, that number has more than quadrupled. The series carved itself a unique place in the market in 2016 when the China Mint began issuing it in metric units- 30 g - rather than imperial ones - 1 troy oz. Each coin was struck from 30 g of .999 fine silver.
Touching Baby Panda Design by Song Lina
The obverse features its traditional design, the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, which is located in the Temple of Heaven in China's capital city. The circular building is tiered and has steps leading up to it. It is encircled by a rim frame in which there are two inscriptions, "People's Republic of China," which is in Chinese characters at the top, and the date, "2020," which is at the bottom.
This year's reverse design was created by Song Lina, who has spent years observing pandas. It features an adorable baby panda who sits facing the holder as he enjoys a meal of bamboo leaves. He is pulling leaves from a tree, which is in the upper left. Inscriptions on this face offer the coin's weight and purity, "30 G AG .999," as well as its face value.
