A Brief History of the Canadian Maple Leaf Series
The Gold Maple series was first struck in 1979 as a way to compete with the then-dominant South African Gold Krugerrand in the market for private gold ownership. The American Gold Eagle wouldn’t be introduced until 1986! The series is now struck in a variety of sizes from .9999 fine gold.
First issued in 1988, the Silver Maple Leaf series shares their design with their iconic gold stable mates. They are struck from .9999 pure silver and are among the purest standard silver bullion issues in the world.
Many collectors and stackers prefer “government backed” bullion issues. The Gold and Silver Maples have their weight and precious metals content guaranteed by the Royal Canadian Mint. In the U.S. they tend to command lower premiums than their American Gold and Silver Eagle neighbors. Maples have proven to be popular with collectors and stackers alike. These coins were among the first to include technologically advanced anti- counterfeiting design features.
