Why purchase this $5 Canada 2020 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf?
In 1988, the Royal Canadian Mint issued the Silver Maple Leaf for the first time. Since then, it has captivated collectors with its simplicity and stunning artistry, as well as its success in capturing Canadian national pride on a coin. The series also managed to set the highest standard for modern bullion, as each piece is struck from 1 oz of .9999 fine silver. In recent years, the series has also led the way in terms of security, as radial lines and a microengraving of the last two years of the date on a maple leaf privy have made the coin almost impossible to counterfeit.
Striking Maple Leaf Design
The coin's obverse bears Susanna Blunt's right-side portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The effigy has been a fixture on Canadian coins for years. While paying homage to the monarch, the design also hints at Canadian independence with the exclusion of a tiara or crown. The monarch's name, "ELIZABETH II," is inscribed above the image, while the coin's face value, "5 DOLLARS," and date, "2020," are inscribed below it.
At the center of the reverse is Canada's national symbol, a single sugar maple leaf. While the design at first seems simple, a close examination of it reveals intricate detail that brings the leaf to life. The coin's purity, "9999," is noted to both sides of the leaf, while the name of the issuing nation, "CANADA," is inscribed above it. Inscriptions of the coin's weight in English and French spread throughout the bottom half of the rim. Together, they read, "FINE SILVER 1 OZ ARGENT PUR."
