Why buy this Shipwreck Series 2020 $1 Australia Triangular 1 oz Silver Vergulde Draeck Gilt Dragon?

Coin collectors are often drawn to stories of danger, exploration, and allure, perhaps due to the exploration and new ground that is often associated with the discovery of precious metals. Few events can compare in those areas to shipwrecks. It is fitting, then, that Australia issued a series commemorating some of these events. This second issue in the series remembers the Vergulde Draeck, a ship of the Dutch East India Company that wrecked in 1656. 118 of the 193 crew members perished, while the others made it ashore in Australia. The under steersman and six crew members went to seek help in Batavia (today Jakarta), but those who stayed behind in Australia were never found. Part of a mintage of 20,000 pieces, this triangular coin was struck from 1 oz of .999 fine silver.

Stunning Ship Designs

The coin's obverse features a stunning scene of the survivors at the wreck site. The ship's boat, a schuyt,, is in the foreground, with men attempting to pull one of the other sailors out of the water. In the background, the ship sinks at the reef. Above is a right-side portrait of Queen Elizabeth II along with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II," "AUSTRALIA," and "2020." The coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR," is noted at the bottom.

On the reverse is an image of the proud vessel as it once was, with wind blowing in its sails. It is surrounded by maritime ornaments. Inscriptions at the bottom are flipped relative to the ship. From top to bottom they offer the weight and purity of the coin, "1 OZ .999 AG," the name of the ship, "VERGULDE DRAECK," and the year of the wreck, "1656."

Flawless MS70

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) awarded this coin the company's highest grade, Mint State 70. That grade is reserved exclusively for coins that appear perfect under 5x magnification.

Unique and Detailed
I bought the first coin in this series as a numismatic oddity. I was so amazed at the proof-like quality and intricate detail that I had to have this next coin.
