Breathtaking Naval Design
Reverse: The reverse of this coin features Australia's oldest shipwreck, the Batavia from 1629. This issue marks one of the most infamous chapters in Australian Maritime history which was realized with mutiny, counter-mutiny and finally the loss of the Batavia and the majority of the lives onboard her. The image can be viewed with the Batavia seemingly setting sail but when flipped, one reads the year 1629, "Batavia" and sees the ship in capsized condition.
Obverse: The obverse of the coin features the "fifth portrait" of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II as designed by the British Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark in the top corner of the triangle. Below the effigy is a brutal scene of shipwreck survivors in combat.
Gem BU Antiqued Finish
The finish used on this magnificent is striking. The use of gray tones and variations in the depth of black tones and the dramatic use of shadows brings out the design's stunning elements. Gem BU coins grade at the coveted Mint State 65 level or higher.
