Why add this 2020 $1 Australia 1 oz Silver Beneath the Southern Skies to your collection?
The Royal Australian Mint's Beneath the Southern Skies Series pays homage to numismatic legend Stuart Devlin. Devlin won a contest to design Australia's decimal coinage in the 1960s, when the country was changing from the pound to the dollar. One of his early designs for the series featured a map of Australia under the Southern Cross, a constellation that has been crucial to navigation in the Southern Hemisphere for centuries. Now, the mint re imagines the design in this collector issue. This coin was struck from 1 oz of .9999 fine silver.
Exquisite Southern Cross Design by Stuart Devlin
The obverse bears a right-side portrait of reigning British monarch Queen Elizabeth II. The monarch wears earrings, a necklace, and her Royal Diamond Diadem, the crown that she wears to Britain's annual State Opening of Parliament. She is joined by three rim inscriptions, "ELIZABETH II," "AUSTRALIA," and "2020."
On the reverse, a map of Australia and the Southern Cross are set against a globe background. The face value of the coin, "1 DOLLAR," is inscribed on the left. At the bottom of this face is an inscription that notes the coin's weight and purity. It reads, "1 OZ 9999 SILVER."
