The American Gold Eagle is the proverbial ‘gold standard’ in terms of world bullion. It is America’s oldest continuing gold bullion series and the favorite option of countless collectors worldwide. One of the reasons for the popularity of the series is that all coins are backed by the United States government for weight and purity. The series is struck in four sizes, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz. Each piece is struck from .9167 fine gold at the West Point Mint. Although collectors who are focused on purity may prefer the Gold Buffalo, the Gold Eagle remains one of the top choices for buyers around the world.
In 1985, President Ronald Reagan signed the Gold Bullion Act of 1985 into law. The following year, the United Ststes’ Mint began producing the American Gold Eagle, the country’s answer to gold bullion coins that were already being struck in some other countries. The series quickly emerged as a favorite of collectors throughout the world, partly because the coins enjoyed the backing of the United States government for weight and purity, thus providing a level of stability and trust that were unmatched anywhere in the world.
Its stunning designs also played a large role in the popularity of the series. Unsurprisingly, the obverse design was a revival of what many consider the most beautiful coin in the history of American numismatics, the Saint-Gaudens. Today, Gold Eagle coins continue to introduce new collectors to this piece of history while also continuing to enamor even the most experienced collectors.
The obverse features the famous Saint-Gaudens design of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The image appeared on the Double Eagle from 1907 until President Franklin Roosevelt stopped production of gold coins in 1933. Liberty stands at the center facing the holder. Her hair and garment blow in the strong breeze, making her appear strong and confident as she elevates her left foot upon a rock. She holds her torch, a symbol of freedom throughout the world, high with her right hand while extending an olive branch, which represents peace, to her side with her left hand.
The backdrop of the rays of the rising sun make her appear larger than life, as does the miniature rendering of the Capitol Dome in the lower left. Her name, “LIBERY,” is inscribed above her head, and the date, “2020,” is included on the right. Fifty stars encircle the image along the rim. This is an adaptation of the Double Eagle design, which originally had forty-six stars and later forty-eight.
The reverse features an eagle family design by Miley Busiek. A male eagle prepares to land in his nest with an olive branch in his talons. Below, his mate tends to their young as she watches his return. Inscriptions on the left and right read, “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and, “IN GOD WE TRUST.” “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is inscribed along the rim at the top, while the respective coin’s weight and face value are noted on the bottom half of the rim.
