National Park of American Samoa is located in the South Pacific, approximately 2,600 miles southwest of Hawaii. It is one of the most remote parks in the U.S. National Park System. The site consists of three volcanic islands: Tutuila, Tau’?, and Ofu and is almost entirely tropical rainforest. The endangered Samoan fruit bat, the subject of the coin’s reverse design, is native to the National Park .
The popular 5 oz. silver ATB series was introduced in 2010. Each issue features one historic location or attraction from each U.S. state or territory. Each coin is struck on 5 oz. .999 fine silver blank.
The reverse design of this issue features the image of two American Samoa fruit bats, a mother and her young. Reverse inscriptions include: NATIONAL PARK, AMERICAN SAMOA, 2020 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The image was designed by Richard Masters of the AIP program and sculpted by the U.S. Mint’s Phebe Hemphill.
The obverse design is the iconic John Flanagian designed portrait of the First President of the United States, George Washington. The image was first used in 1932 on the circulating U.S quarter dollar. Obverse inscriptions include: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and QUARTER DOLLAR.
This familiar design of President Washington is based on the bust sculpted by French artist Jean-Antoine Houdin. The bust is part of the permanent collection of the historic Washington Home site in Mt. Vernon, Virginia.
The America The Beautiful 5 oz. , silver coins have been wildly popular with collectors. The new designs have attracted new coin collectors and the occasional low mintages have kept seasoned collectors interested. This series is comprised of the largest silver coins struck at the U.S. Mint. Each entry in the series has a unique reverse featuring a design that honors a National Park or historic site in each U.S. State or U.S. Territory. The America the Beautiful series was first struck in 2010 and will conclude in 2021 with the 56th issue in the series.
The 5 oz. ATB silver series is only struck at the Philadelphia Branch of the United States Mint. A German coin press was installed there in 2010 specifically for striking this popular series. The .999 fine silver 5 oz. blanks for this series are provided by Sunshine Minting, Inc. located in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
