2020 Silver Canada Peace Dollar 1 oz. Proof Coin

2020 Silver Canada Peace Dollar 1 oz. Proof Coin

In 2019, the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) partnered with former US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti to bring the Peace & Liberty Medal to collectors. Susan Taylor’s Pax design for that coin now serves as the staple of a planned new dollar series for America’s neighbor to the north.

This first ever issue in the new series is available in the United States exclusively from MCM. Each piece will be struck from 1 oz of .9999 fine silver at the RCM. That is the same weight and high standard of purity used for the Silver Maple Leaf. Just 5,500 of these coins will be made, meaning that most collectors will miss out on this stunning new series.

History of this Series

Although this is the first issue in a new Canadian Peace Dollar Series, this coin is not without a rich history. It piggybacks on the tradition of the American Peace Dollar, which was issued from 1921-1935. That coin was designed by Anthony de Francisci to celebrate the end of the First World War. The layout and design of the reverse of this new dollar is like the obverse of the American one. The actual design comes from the Peace & Liberty issue from 2019, the first ever collaboration between the US Mint and the RCM. Now, the Canadian Peace Dollar brings together old and new in a stunning new series.

The obverse of the new dollar features an image that is familiar to all but the newest collectors. It is Susanna Blunt’s left-side portrait of reigning British monarch and Canadian head of state Queen Elizabeth II. Blunt shows the monarch wearing earrings and a necklace. She strikes a note of Canadian independence, though, as she depicts the monarch without a crown or a tiara. The Queen’s name, “ELIZABETH II,” is inscribed on the rim to the left, while “D. G. REGINA” (by the Grace of God, Queen) is included on the right. “CANADA” and “DOLLAR” are inscribed above and below the portrait, respectively.

The reverse bears Susan Taylor’s Canadian Peace design. The design first appeared on the 2019 Peace & Liberty medals. It depicts Pax (Latin for “Peace”) in left-side profile down to her shoulders, which are open to the holder. The young woman wears a crown of maple leaves and olive branches, which symbolize peace, order, and good government in the nation. Her name, “PAX,” is inscribed to the left, and the date, “2020,” is included to the right. Canada’s national motto, “A MARI USQUE AD MARE” (From sea to sea) is inscribed along the rim at the top.
